Heifer Viet Nam’s Training On Reproductive Health And Value-Based Visioning
Reproductive health is a crucial issue which has negative effect on women’s physical and mental health. In the situation that many rural people, especially women, have little/ limited information about reproductive health that leads to many dangerous diseases, HVN wanted to provide basic knowledge relating to this problem so that project members can take care of themselves. Therefore, reproductive health is enclosed in training course held by Heifer Viet Nam from June 3 – 7. The training attracted full participation of community facilitators (CFs) and project assistants. Doctor Do Thi Kim Ngoc, Director of the Center of Reproductive Health of Can Tho City, took the lead in instructing participants in reproductive health. The participants were exposed to many common diseases related to reproductiveness and harmful effects of bad habits to reproductive tract. They also learned about the causes and symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases and many practical ways to prevent the diseases. Doctor Ngoc said, “Rural women have to work hard in bad working environment. They also have less access to the science; therefore, they don’t know how to take care of their health, especially reproductive health. I, myself, have witnessed many unfortunate women suffering from reproductive system diseases. If they had learned about the information sooner, they could have avoided that situation.”
In terms of value-based visioning and planning, this is a catalyst for building strong Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Through visioning, the SHG could ses their real situation and plan their own activities to make changes. In order to answer the question “What do we want our groups to be like in three or five years?”, the participants spent the last two days of the training learning about how to help SHGs to define the situation, envision the future, plan and manage group activities to achieve their goals. Mr.Loc, CF of Heifer project in Soc Trang province, said, “Generally, poor households don’t think much about their future. They just live day by day without any future plans. That is the reason why they couldn’t get through poverty. Visioning training is very necessary for them. It gives them the ownership to find their own direction in life and take action to make better changes.”
All CFs showed their eagerness and interest in passing on what they have learned to their SHGs.. With the support from Heifer and the enthusiasm of CFs, project members are expected to increase their life quality.
