Bi-annual meeting with Advisory Committee
In order to gain an insight to Heifer project and ensure the project impacts in the next fiscal year, Heifer Viet Nam (HVN) held a meeting with Advisory Committee on May 20 in Tra Vinh province.
At the meeting room, Mrs. Doan Trang, Country Director of HVN, Mr. Ho Duc Tham, senior program manager, assembled the Advisory Committee including Dr. Nguyen Ngoc De, Mr. Truong Van Quang, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Bao and Mr. Mai Van Hiep, who are high-ranking state government officials, to give an overview to the projects in FY11. After analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the projects, the Advisory Committee gave many practical solutions to difficulties in working project partners, disbursement process and the changes in the market.
The Advisory Committee was also introduced to “Honduras Manifesto”, which is central to implement effective projects for greater impacts. Basing on the requirements in Honduras Manifesto, the participants discussed on strategic approaches to increase the impact of Heifer project and mobilize the fund from other organizations to implement more projects. Heifer Viet Nam was suggested to focus on co-funding and implementing projects in alignment with country strategies. Dr. De, professor of Can Tho University and member of the Advisory Committee, presented the result of an assessment on Heifer project which indicated that Heifer project was at the first stage of the process to form co-operatives.
In the afternoon, participants visited Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Huyen Hoi commune. SHG members cheerfully shared what they achieved and how they have changed since one year of project implementation. One female SHG member said with confidence, “In the past, my duck production was big loss but since attending the project and the technical training, I learn how to raise ducks effectively and I have made good profit. Similarly, I did not know how to raise cow. My project cow is very healthy and I also learn to use straw to feed cow as extra food source.” All SHG members take advantage of cow manure for sale, which helps them earn $ 4-5 per month. They all contribute $ 1.00 for group saving fund and they spend the rest for their children’s education. Mr. Nguyen Quoc Bao, member of Advisory Committee, said, “I am happy to see the positive changes of members in the project. It proves that Heifer projects are effective. To gain greater impacts, HVN should increase the quality of the projects and strengthen the collaboration with the media to let everybody see the effectiveness of the projects. It is a good way to have the support from other organizations.”
With the enthusiastic support from the Advisory Committee, Heifer Viet Nam is expecting to spread out the impacts of projects in poor areas in the country.
