On August 18, I and some staff of Heifer Viet Nam followed the coordinator, paying a visit to the monthly meeting of two Self-Help Groups (SHG) in Tra Ban 1 commune of the project “Improving the capacity of disadvantaged farm households in Chau Hung A of Vinh Loi District, Bac Lieu Province through VBHCD” (#22-775-27). Despite very hot weather, the warm welcome and sharing from the families made all the visitors feel very happy and forget all the discomfort caused by the heat.
The SHG members were all very eager to share their experiences from the trainings and SHG activities. Ms. Ngoc Giau, 41 year old mother of two children, smiled and told us her stories, “My family was poor so all my siblings did not go to school. I learned how to read and write from my friends. I got married and my husband’s family was very poor, too. We did not have opportunities to learn about production techniques or any other things. When Heifer brought the project here, I discussed with my husband on joining the project.”
Ms. Giau has never missed any training classes or group meetings and she is very active in contributing her ideas to make her group stronger. At home, she shares all that she has learned with her husband and children. In return, her husband is always supportive in the housework so she has time for the SHG.
Husbands of other women who are SHG members also have changed their behavior and attitude towards their wives. Besides, they do not drink as much as they did and take better care of their families. Their amazing changes are assumed to be made by gender training.
The couple of Mr. Tam and Ms. Thi is another demonstration of the power of training. At the beginning of the project, the husband had a negative thought about the SHG and disagreed with Thi on joining the project. However, he has changed his mind since the SHG once invited him to a group meeting. Since then, he has accompanied his wife to all group activities and shared his knowledge from the trainings with his neighbors. Their family life is much happier.
Mr. Le Van Hung, 44-year-old SHG member, had sincere thoughts to share about the project, “Before the project, I used to quarrel about odd things with my wife and looked down on her work. But thanks to the gender training, I feel sympathetic with her work, and I started sharing housework with her as well as have no more bad words to her.”
The visit leaves a strong belief in me about the training miracle.
