Heifer Viet Nam Holds Training On Group Management

Well group management is a crucial element in building a strong group. In order for Community Facilitators (CFs) to help Self-Help Group (SHG) in managing their groups and accordingly, to enhance the project impacts, Heifer Viet Nam (HVN) held a five-day training on Group Management on March 7-11, 2011.

Ten CFs and eight project assistants participated in the training under the instruction of Mr. Chu Dung and Ms. Hong Chau, lecturers from Center for Social Work and Community Development Research and Consultancy. Within three days, participants learned about the roles of SHGs in the project, group behavior and the definition of a strong group. In addition, they were also exposed to many useful skills in group management including communication, conflict resolution, cooperation, group-planning and etc. Participants had chances to practice these skills and gained more experiences through case studies and discussions in which they could share their own experiences in solving problems in SHGs. “CFs need to be fully equipped with skills in group management in order to help group management committee to deal with problems in SHGs. Being managed well, the group would be stronger.”, said Mr. Chu Dung.

The next topics of the following two days were SHG sub-group formation, the rural clean water, and guidelines on writig good projct success stories and photos. Participants were introduced guidelines in forming sub-groups within SHGs, an initiative of Heifer, which can help ensure the proper management of the SHGs' diverse activities. In the situation that many project members are still using polluted water for daily life, leading to negative effects on the community healths, HVN Training department designed a training section on rural clean water in which participants were provided with information about the situation and effect of water pollution in rural areas as well as some simple practices to purify the water for daily use. Furthermore, to increase the quality of stories in progress reports, HVN Communicatio and Networking department, shared many advanced guidelines on writing stories and taking photos. The participants committed to improving the project story qualities from next quarter.

Mr. Dau, CF of Long An province, said, “I found it hard to deal with many problems in my groups, but now I obtain many good skills in group management. I will use them to solve those problems.” The CF of Vinh Long province named Lam stated, “I will hold training on rural clean water for project members as soon as I come back because many members don’t realize that water pollution has caused many diseases in the community. Thanks Heifer for this timely training section.” “There are many successful members in my project. I will write some success stories in order to let everybody know about the success and impacts in our project.” he added.
